Blair Varnes

Blair “Barney” Varnes graduated from DePaul University in 1926 and is widely regarded as one of the most versatile athletes in DePaul’s history. During his time at DePaul, he competed in basketball, football, baseball, and track, and he is noted for being among the first players in the region to use the one-handed shot. After his collegiate career, Varnes played professionally with the Chicago Bruins of the American Basketball League and later turned to coaching, influencing the next generation of players including future DePaul Hall of Famer Ray Meyer. In recognition of his outstanding athletic achievement and lasting legacy, Varnes was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978.’
