As a member of the NCAA and the BIG EAST Conference, DePaul University is responsible for ensuring that everyone connected to the program, including staff, faculty, student-athletes, alumni, and friends, follows NCAA and conference rules.
Who is a prospective student-athlete?
A student who has started classes for the ninth grade. A student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally.

How do I maintain athletics eligibility status?
Prospective student-athletes must maintain Athletics Eligibility (formerly referred to as "amateurism") to participate in college sports. This is governed by NCAA Article 12 and includes topics like compensation from professional athletics, use of an agent, or entering a professional draft. Contact the compliance office with specific questions or scenarios.
The Student-Athlete Experience
A student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the athletics staff or other representative of athletics interests with a view toward the student's ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletics program. Any other student becomes a student-athlete only when the student reports for an intercollegiate squad that is under the jurisdiction of the athletics department.
Student-Athlete Assistance Fund
It is a NCAA fund intended to provide direct benefits to student-athletes or their families as determined by conference offices. As a guiding principle, the fund shall be used to assist student-athletes in meeting financial needs that arise in conjunction with participation in intercollegiate athletics, enrollment in an academic curriculum, or that recognize academic achievement. At DePaul, the Student-Athlete Assistance Fund is also used for assisting student-athletes with costs associated with pursuing post-graduate education. What are the rules regarding employment?
Compensation may be paid to a student-athlete only for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.

What are the rules regarding outside competition?
Student-athletes in sports other than basketball may generally participate on outside teams, or as individuals in outside events, as long as their team is not in its declared season. Some sports limit the number of current DePaul student-athletes who may participate on the same outside team. Basketball has stricter rules regarding outside teams. All student-athletes must complete an Outside Competition Request workflow in Teamworks Compliance+Recruiting before participating in any outside event.
Boosters are representatives of DePaul's athletics interests, and their activities are the responsibility of DePaul Athletics. The information below matters for anyone who supports our programs.
Who is a representative of athletics interest?
Individual, independent agency, corporate entity, or other organization who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution's executive or athletics administration to:
- Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution's intercollegiate athletics program;
- Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;
- Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;
- Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or
- Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution's athletics program.
Can I use a student-athlete's name, image, or likeness?
Following the legislation that went into effect in Illinois in July 2021, DePaul launched a comprehensive entrepreneurship and brand development program for student-athletes, enabling Blue Demon student-athletes to fully leverage their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). What is a countable athletically-related activity?
Countable athletically-related activities include any required activity with an athletics purpose involving student-athletes and at the direction of, or supervised by one or more of an institution's coaching staff (including strength and conditioning coaches) and must be counted within the weekly and daily limitations. Administrative activities (e.g., academic meetings, compliance meetings) shall not be considered as countable athletically related activities. (17.02.1)
What are required athletically related activities?
Any activities, including CARA, that are required as a student-athlete (i.e. promotional activities, student hosting, recruiting activities, fundraising community service, travel to and from competition, media activities, teambuilding).
What is a time management policy?
The time management plan policy was designed to give student-athletes more flexibility with their schedule of activities that are not currently being tracked. In addition to tracking what the NCAA calls Countable Athletically Related Activity ("CARA"), the new TMP will help to monitor additional Required Athletically Related Activity ("RARA") that currently has no limit. It is designed to create a more balanced athletic, academic and social experience for the student-athlete and help them to enhance their experience while on campus by allowing them to spend more time participating in non-athletic activities.
What is a secondary violation?
A secondary violation is a violation that is isolated or inadvertent in nature, provides or is intended to provide only a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage and does not include any significant recruiting inducement or extra benefit. Multiple secondary violations by a member institution may collectively be considered as a major violation. (19.02.2.1)
What is the definition of recruiting?
Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or the prospect's family for the purpose of securing the prospect's enrollment at the University and/or participation in the athletics program.
