Walk-on Carey Ryan competed in the hammer throw event for Blue Demon Track & Field from 1997 to 2002. During his time at DePaul, Ryan became known as the only student-athlete in Conference USA history to eclipse the 60-meter mark in the hammer throw. At the 2001 NCAA Championship, Ryan placed 6th. The following year, he finished in third place and became a two-time All-American.

By his senior year, Ryan was the three-time Conference USA champion in the hammer and later named to the Conference USA all-Decade Team for Outdoor Track in 2005.
