Edwin Fry

Edwin “Ed” Fry was a standout student-athlete at DePaul University, competing on the men’s cross country and track and field teams from 1959 to 1962. During his time as a Blue Demon, Fry demonstrated remarkable endurance, skill, and dedication, leaving a lasting impression on teammates and coaches alike. In recognition of his athletic achievements and contributions to the program, he was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
Following his collegiate career, Fry became a legendary coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he led both the men’s and women’s track and cross country programs for more than four decades. Under his guidance, IUP produced numerous conference champions and All-American athletes, and Fry earned a reputation as a mentor who emphasized discipline, resilience, and personal growth.
Beyond coaching, Fry maintained an exceptional personal running career, including a notable 17th-place finish at the 1978 New York Marathon and multiple age-group accolades. He also shared his passion for music, teaching piano theory at IUP, highlighting his versatility and dedication to education and mentorship in multiple fields.
Ed Fry passed away on October 3, 2020, leaving behind a profound legacy as a student-athlete, coach, mentor, and community leader. His impact on DePaul athletics, collegiate track and field, and the broader running community continues to be felt and celebrated.
