The 1977-78 men's basketball team was the first DePaul team to reach the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight since 1943. The program ended the season ranked No. 3 nationally in the Associated Press poll with a 27-3 record.Â
The season marked Hall of Fame Coach Ray Meyer's 36th season at the helm of the program. Despite starting the season unranked, DePaul won 25 of 27 games in the regular season, earning the top at-large seed in the Midwest region of the NCAA Tournament. DePaul opened the tournament with an 80-78 victory against Creighton.Â
The Blue Demons then defeated No. 9 Louisville in the Sweet Sixteen, 90-89, in a double overtime thriller that remains one of the most notable games in DePaul history. Dave Corzine cemented his legacy with a 46 point performance, nine rebounds and three blocks. Corzine's 46 points remains the fourth-most scored in a single-game in program history and is a DePaul NCAA Tournament game record.Â
DePaul eventually fell one game later, 84-64, to Notre Dame in the Elite Eight as the Irish made their first Final Four in program history.Â
