South Florida Takes Second Straight Title
2/25/2001 12:00:00 AM | WOMEN'S TRACK
South Florida (112.5) outpointed both Tulane (101) and the host Cougars (95) with an all around performance that witnessed the Bulls grab at least one point in all 16 events. South Florida only took two titles--Black in the 60 meters and Jolene Williams in the 3,000 meters--but gained enough points from top to bottom to hold off the Cougars and the late charge of the Green Wave.
Tulane took both the distance medley and the mile relays and also had individual champions in the 400 meters (Nadja Petersen), 800 meters (Angela Miller), mile run (Katrina Gemmell) and triple jump (Marie Ahlander). Houston grabbed four individual honors, including a double accolade for nine-time All-American Jenny Adams.
Yesterday Adams took the long jump--the event she captured the national championship outdoors last season. Saturday afternoon Adams won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.28, took third in the 60 meters and ran the opening leg of the Cougars third-place 4x400-meter relay squad. Adams shared Athlete of the Year honors with USF's Black.
Marquette posted an impressive fourth-place showing behind first-place winners Susan Barth and Annie Lewandowski. Barth captured the 5,000 meters, while Lewandowski won the shot put. Marquette youngster Brianna Dahm was the Freshman of the Year, as she took second in the mile (4:57.70) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:17.06).
South Florida head coach Kelly Phillips was the Conference USA Coach of the Year, guiding her Bulls to their second straight title.
