Carey Ryan Wins Hammer Throw At Prestigious Drake Relays

DePaul senior thrower Carey Ryan chalked up another accolade by winning the invitational hammer throw at the 92nd Drake Relays over the weekend. Ryan became the first DePaul athlete ever to win an event at the Drake Relays. Blue Demon athletes were spread throughout the country as they participated in the Penn Relays and UIC Open in addition to the Des Moines event.
Drake Relays - Des Moines, Iowa Ryan's throw of 68.46m (224'07") was his third-best distance of the outdoor season, but also his third throw long enough to automatically qualify him for the NCAA Championships in June. His season-best distance of 68.98m (226'04") at the Lee Calhoun Invite on April 14 is ranked fifth in the NCAA rankings this season.
Other top finishers for DePaul at the Drake Relays included the men's spring medley relay team of Adam Crothers, Larry Inanga, Siddiqu Muhammad and Kai Murray. They finished 12th with a time of 3:25.05. Frank Guzman finished 13th in the shot put with a distance 16.83m (55'02.75").
Penn Relays - Philadelphia, Pa. At the Penn Relays on Thursday, Chris Birchall finished in 17th place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:28.67.
UIC Open - Chicago Luis Samayoa and Salvador Andrade earned first-place finishes at the UIC Open on Saturday. Samayoa won the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:56.06 while Andrade was victorious at 22.42 in the 200-meter dash. Other top finishers were Jarrod Jahnke with a second place in the shot put with a distance of 13.41 meters and Larry Vonckx's third-place finish with a time of 8:46.21 in the 3,000-meter run.
Katie Sullivan and Erin Moffett were the top women's finishers. Sullivan tied the DePaul high jump record for the second time this season with a jump of 5'4". Moffett's time of 2:25.53 placed her second in the 800-meter run and she was third in the 1,500-meter run at 4:50.49. Dee Moore's 200-meter dash time of 26.25 was good enough for third place.
