Cross Country Opens 2005 Season

CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend to compete in the Hawkeye Open on Friday, September 2.  The race, hosted by the University of Iowa, takes place on the Ashton Cross Country Course.  The field of competitors brings both men’s and women’s squads from Illinois, Wayne State, Loyola-Chicago, Iowa, Northern Iowa, and Eastern Illinois.

The women attack a 3K course at 6:00 p.m. while the men start their 6K race at 6:45 p.m. 

Coach Gordon Thomson’s squads are led this year by women’s captain Carrie Moffett and men’s co-captains Anthony Becknek and Richie Byrne.  Both the men’s and women’s teams field no seniors this season, relying on the leadership of their junior captains as they enter the competitive BIG EAST conference.

This weekend’s competition should prove a sufficient first test for the 2005 Blue Demons, as the men face an Iowa team that finished 13^th overall at last year’s NCAA Championships and the women compete against an Illinois squad that finished 20^th at the NCAA Championships in 2004.
