Acceptable and Unacceptable Recruiting
The recruitment of prospects is reserved for authorized University staff members. There are many NCAA rules prohibiting booster involvement in the recruiting process, however,
A Booster MAY…
- Display normal politeness if there is an unavoidable, incidental contact (“run in”) with a prospect some place other than the prospect’s educational institution, practice, or competition site. The contact must be incidental and not made for recruiting purposes or prearranged by anyone.
- Speak to a prospect on the telephone only if the prospect initiates the telephone conversation and the call is not for recruiting purposes. All questions concerning DePaul’s athletics program must be referred to the DePaul athletics department staff.
- May view a prospect’s athletics contests on his or her own initiative, but may NOT contact the prospect, his or her parents, guardians, relatives, coaches, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospect.
- Continue established relationships with family friends or neighbors who become prospects. However, the contacts with these friends and neighbors must not be made for recruiting purposes and must not be initiated by a member of DePaul’s coaching staff.
A Booster MAY NOT…
- Make in-person contact (on or off-campus), telephone, e-mail or write a prospect for recruiting purposes.
- Have communication (e.g. phone call, text message) with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians at any time. As well, do not contact a prospect to congratulate him or her on committing to DePaul.
- Visit a prospect’s high school/prep school to pick up film/videotape or transcripts pertaining to the evaluation of the prospect’s academic eligibility or athletics ability.
- Contact a prospect’s coach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect.
- Directly or indirectly make any arrangements for a prospect to receive any financial aid, cash, loans, or other benefits of any kind.
- Provide, arrange, or pay for any type of transportation, including an automobile, for a prospect.
- Make contact with a prospect when he or she is on-campus for an official or unofficial recruiting visit (except for unavoidable, incidental contact).
- Provide cash to a prospect for entertainment purposes.
- Provide anything to a prospect without prior approval from the Compliance Office of the DePaul Athletics Department.
Who is a Current Student-Athlete?
A current student-athlete is any DePaul student-athlete who is a member of any DePaul intercollegiate athletics team. NCAA rules apply to all student-athletes, not only those receiving an athletic scholarship or those who were recruited. From the time a student-athlete enrolls full-time at DePaul, all NCAA rules apply until graduation from DePaul.
As a result of their participation in intercollegiate athletics, student-athletes are permitted to receive many benefits in accordance with NCAA legislation.
A Booster MAY….
- Contribute funds to DePaul to finance a scholarship or grant-in-aid for a particular sport, but the decision as to how such funds are to be allocated in the sport shall rest exclusively with DePaul University.
- Provide complimentary tickets to professional sports contests to DePaul University for entertainment purposes of student-athletes involved in an away-from-home contest.
- Provide an occasional meal for a student-athlete or entire team at one’s family home (may be catered) on infrequent and special occasions with prior approval from the DePaul Athletics Department.
- Provide reasonable local transportation to a student-athlete to attend the meal function at your home with prior approval from the DePaul Athletics Department.
- Employ a student-athlete and pay him or her at the going rate for work actually performed with prior approval from the Compliance Office of the DePaul Athletics Department
A Booster MAY NOT…
- Contribute funds to finance a scholarship or grant-in-aid for a particular student-athlete.
- Provide a student-athlete, his or her relatives, or friends with professional services without charge or at a reduced cost.
- Provide a loan or guarantee a bond for a student-athlete, his or her relatives or friends. Additionally, you may not sign or cosign a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan for a student-athlete, his or her relatives, or friends.
- Provide an automobile or the use of an automobile to a student-athlete, his or her relatives, or friends.
- Pay for, arrange for payment of, or provide cost-free transportation for a student-athlete, his or her family, or friends.
- Provide a student-athlete, or his or her relatives or friends, with a special discount, payment arrangement or credit on purchases (i.e. airline ticket, clothing) or services (i.e. dry cleaning, laundry).
