Seniors Lead Cross Country in Season Opener

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill.- Seniors Carrie Moffett and Sean Conroy snagged a pair of third place finishes as the DePaul cross country teams opened their 2006 season at the UIC Opener.  The men’s team finished second while the women’s team placed third at Horsetail Lake.

Moffett finished the women’s two-mile course with a time of 11:45 to finish third while freshman Terah Cheatham followed in eighth place with a time of 11:57.  Freshman Cassey Lynn finished 13^th, senior Kelly Cunningham placed 20^th, and freshman Sabrina Petri came in 30^th to wrap-up the top-five finishes for the Blue Demons.

The women’s team finished ahead of UW-Green Bay, Chicago State and St. Xavier in the team standings while UIC took first and Loyola-Chicago placed second.

In his first race for DePaul, Conroy delivered his third place performance with a time of 20:57 on the 4.1 mile course.  Senior Anthony Becknek and freshman Jakub Kolacz crossed the finish line together in 21:32 to tie for 10^th place while sophomore Jeremy Applebaum followed close behind and finished 12^th at 21:38.  Freshman Luke Rygh closed out the top-five for the Blue Demon men, taking 15^th place with a time of 21:50.

The men’s squad placed nine runners in the top 20 as senior Richard Byrne, freshman Nick Shaefer, freshman Eoin Dunne, and freshman Glenn Morris crossed the finish line at 16^th, 17^th, 18^th, and 19^th respectively.  The team topped Loyola, UW-Green Bay, Chicago State and St. Xavier in the standings while UIC placed first.

The competition was the first meet for Pat Savage as DePaul’s head coach.

“We’re off to a great start and I’m really happy with the performances today.  In the men’s race we packed up well and placed most of our runners in the top 20.  On the women’s side, everyone gave a good performance and it was great to see two of our freshmen place high in their first race,” Savage said.

The Blue Demons return to competition on Friday, September 8^th in Peoria, Ill. at the Bradley Open.
