Men's Tennis Concludes Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. The DePaul men’s tennis team closed out three days of competition at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational on Sunday. Alasdair Graetz and Adam Williams earned doubles runner-up honors as the Blue Demons finished the tournament at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
Graetz and Williams rolled through the doubles bracket with victories over pairs from Minnesota and Western Michigan. The Blue Demon tandem knocked off Minnesota’s Dino Bilankov and Pierre Dumas, 8-3, in the opening round before posting an 8-6 victory over Western Michigan’s R.K. Bacalla and Casey Cullen in the second round. Graetz and Williams closed the weekend with an 8-6 win over the Broncos’ Alex Birchmeier and Kazuya Komada in the final round.
Jose Moncada and Austin Doerner also reached the final round of the doubles bracket. The DePaul pair recorded an 8-4 victory over Michael Muskievicz and Gian Hodgson of Wisconsin before topping Minnesota’s Adam Altepeter and Derek Peterson, 8-2. Western Michigan’s Bryan Norville and Alejandro Staub defeated Moncada and Doerner, 8-4, in the final round.
Norville and Staub were named doubles champion for losing the fewest number of games on their way to the final round. No championship match was played in the doubles bracket.
Moncada advanced to the semifinal round of the Flight A singles bracket with victories over opponents from Northwestern and Minnesota. The Blue Demon junior topped Northwestern’s Alexey Evstratenkov, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round and posted a 3-6, 6-4, 15-13 victory over Minnesota’s Dino Bilankov in the quarterfinals. The semifinal round saw Moncada fall, 6-1, 7-5, to Tobias Wernet of Minnesota in the semifinal round.
The Blue Demons return to action on Thursday, October 18 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The tournament runs through Monday, October 22 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
