Grgec and Hartman Post Wins at Wilson/ITA Regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. Sophomore Vanja Grgec and freshman Ben Hartman delivered singles victories as the DePaul men’s tennis team opened the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday. Both Blue Demons advance to Friday’s second round of qualifying singles play at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The first round of the qualifying draw saw Grgec post a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chicago State’s Piabowo Imanuel, while Hartman recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Marquette’s Brett Binkley. Friday’s round of 32 begins at 9 a.m. (CST) as Grgec faces Notre Dame’s Sean Corrigan and Hartman takes on Butler’s Eric Breitenbach.
Sophomore Alasdair Graetz and freshman Bartosz Jozwiak came up short in Thursday’s first round. Graetz suffered a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 loss to Louisville’s Alejandro Calligari and Jozwiak fell, 7-6 (2), 6-3, to Matt Parks of Michigan. The consolation draw pits Graetz against Scott Kathary of Youngstown State, while Jozwiak faces Western Michigan’s Bryan Norville.
The Blue Demons begin doubles competition on Friday with three tandems in the 64-team bracket. Freshman Adam Williams joins Graetz to take on UIC’s Bastian Harbo and Adriano Liccardo, while Grgec and Jozwiak face John Allare and Alex Forger of Michigan State. Juniors Austin Doerner and Jose Moncada compete against Minnesota’s Adam Altepeter and Dino Bilankov.
Friday’s action concludes with the second round of doubles play, which begins at 8 p.m.
