Men's Tennis Closes WMU Vredevelt Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The DePaul men’s tennis team posted four singles victories as the Western Michigan Vredevelt Invitational came to a close on Sunday. The Blue Demons went 14-7 in singles play and 9-3 in doubles action during the three-day tournament at West Hills Athletic Club.
Sophomore Alasdair Graetz closed the weekend with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over WMU’s Alejandro Staub in the Gold Draw. Graetz posted a 3-0 singles record during the tournament but WMU’s Alex Birchmeier won the Gold Draw title based on fewest games lost.
Sunday’s action saw junior Jose Moncada compete for the Brown Draw title, while freshman Tim Cadet played for the Black Draw championship. Moncada suffered a 7-6 (7), 6-2 loss to WMU’s Kevin Hayward and Cadet fell, 6-2, 6-3, to WMU’s R.K. Bacalla.
DePaul picked up a trio of victories in consolation play as junior Austin Doerner, freshman Ben Hartman and freshman Bartosz Jozwiak won their respective matches. Doerner knocked off WMU’s Kazuya Komada, 6-4, 6-3, while Jozwiak topped Michigan State’s Tyler Sauerbrey, 6-3, 6-4. Hartman edged Clark Richardson of Michigan State, 7-5, 7-5.
The Vredevelt Invitational concludes DePaul’s fall tournament schedule. The Blue Demons open their 2008 dual season on Saturday, January 12 against cross-town rival UIC.

Alasdair Graetz (DePaul) def. Alejandro Staub (WMU 6-4, 2-6, 6-4
Since Birchmeier and Graetz were both 3-0, Birchmeier wins the championship based on fewest games lost (19-23)
