COLUMBUS, Ohio Day one of the 2008 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships was completed today. Singles qualifying matches were competed on the Ohio State Varsity tennis courts and at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
Ben Hartman went up against BIG EAST Conference rival Louisville’s Tim Barnoud. The sophomore Blue Demon took the first set 7-5. Having dropped the second set 1-6, Hartman rebounded back to win the deciding set, 6-4.
Next, Hartman will face Drew Daniel from the University of Michigan. Two more victories earns him a spot in the main singles draw, where he’ll join pre-qualifing teammates Jose Moncada, Alasdair Graetz, and Austin Doerner.
Bartosz Jozwiak bowed out in the first round against Rob West of Cleveland State, 6-4, 7-6. Also suffering a loss was Vanja Grgec, who lost in two sets to Iowa’s Will Vasos, 6-0, 7-6.
Singles qualifying matches resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (CST) The first round of doubles play begins tomorrow afternoon.
