Moncada Advances to Second Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio The DePaul men’s tennis team finished competing at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships today. Jose Moncada picked up a win in the first round of the main singles draw, while Alasdair Graetz claimed a victory in the consolation round.
Moncada made it out of the round of 64 by defeating Chris Peek of Indiana, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round of bracket play, the No. 19 seeded Moncada lost in two sets to Minnesota’s Tobias Wernet, who was seeded No. 14 (6-4, 6-4).
Alasdair Graetz bowed out in the first round to No. 16 seed Dennis Nevelo of Illinois. He dropped both sets by a score of 6-2. Also exiting in round one was Austin Doerner, who after winning the first set 7-6, dropped the following two to Illinois’ Roy Kalmanovich, 6-3, 6-2.
In the consolation round, Graetz went head-to-head against Peek, who Moncada had defeated earlier that day. The Blue Demon proved to be too much for the Hoosier, winning both sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Doerner went up against Ruan Roelofse of Illinois. After being tied after two sets, Roelofse took the third set to win the match (2-6, 6-4, 10-7).
DePaul returns to action on Halloween weekend, when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the Vredevelt Invitational hosted by Western Michigan. Opening rounds begin on Friday, Oct. 31 and run through Sunday, Nov. 2.
