Doerner and Grgec Take the Gold Flight Crown

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The DePaul men’s tennis team concluded the first day of the WMU Vredevelt invitational today at Western Michigan. Tim Cadet and Juan Xavier Munoz went undefeated in the round robin bracket, while Austin Doerner and Vanja Grgec took the Gold Flight bracket crown.
Cadet and Munoz defeated both Aris Spirtos and Adam Perkins of Cleveland State, and Richard Roberston and Mike Osbourn of Bradley by a score of 8-6. In the final match of the day, the Blue Demon duo beat Byron Wowchuck and Pop Regh from Wright State, 8-2, raising their season record to 3-2.
Doerner and Grgec (6-2) met up with Ben Hartman and Bartosz Jozwiak (7-4) in the finals, but elected to play two teams from Cleveland State instead. After both teams went 2-0, Doerner and Grgec beat Steven Wipprecht and Robert Fox, 8-1, while Hartman and Jozwiak lost to Phil Orno and Chris Kepatz 8-4. Doerner and Grgec placed first, and Hartman and Joziwiak were placed second.
Jose Moncada and Alasdair Graetz (10-3) represented DePaul in the Brown Flight. They first knocked of Peter Antons and Stephen Vogl of Indiana 8-6, before defeating Western Michigan’s Kevin Hayward and Zeyad Montasser, 9-7. In the championship match, the Blue Demon pair lost to Cleveland State’s Rob West and YannickGoossens, 8-6.
Rounds one and two of the singles flights begins tomorrow at 7 a.m. (CST)
