Five Advance to Singles Flight Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The DePaul men’s tennis team competed in two rounds of singles action today, during day two of the Vredevelt Invitational. Five Blue Demon athletes advance to their respective flight championships, while two bounced back from an early loss to make it to the consolation finals.
Austin Doerner, who along with Vanja Grgec won the Gold Doubles flight yesterday, advanced to the Brown Flight finals after defeating Nick Camilleri of Wright State, 7-5, 7-6 (5). In round one, he knocked off Milos Romic of Bradley, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
Also representing the Blue Demons in the Brown Flight, Jose Moncada recovered from a first round loss to beat Cleveland State’s Rob West 6-2, 6-3. He’ll face Stephen Vogl of Indiana State in tomorrow’s consolation finals.
Grgec will compete for his second flight championship tomorrow against JJ Bolock. After a first round bye, the Junior Blue Demon defeated Byron Wowchuck of Wright State 6-7 (6), 6-2, 1-0 (2).
Bartosz Jozwiak will play for the Bronco Flight crown tomorrow morning against Western Michigan’s Pablo Olivarez. Jozwiak bet Pop Rehg of Wright State, 6-2, 6-1, and Brad Noel of Western Michigan, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8).
Tim Cadet, also in the Bronco Flight, suffered an early loss to Pablo Olivarez from Western Michigan. After regrouping, he defeated Wright State’s Aris Spirtos, 6-0, 6-3, to earn a consolation finals berth.
Alasdair Graetz went 2-0 in the Black Flight singles action. He earned a spot in the championship match against Peter Antons of Indiana, after knocking off opponents from Wright State and Cleveland State. His first match, against Michkel Krusmagi, was won by a score of 6-7 (7), 6-4, 1-0 (4), and his second match, versus Robert Fox, was one in a decisive 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Ben Hartman continued the winning streak for the Blue Demons, winning both of his matches in two sets. Tomorrow he is slated to face Western Michigan’s Michael Calderone in the Gold Flight Championship match.
Freshman Juan Xavier Munoz went 2-0 in the round robin round of singles play. He first defeated Trevor McGrath of Bradley, 6-3, 6-1, before beating Wright State’s Brad Krick, 6-0, 6-3.
Championship and consolation championship matches resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CST), in addition to the final match-ups in the round robin bracket.
