Four Flight Champions

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The DePaul men’s tennis team left the campus of Western Michigan with four flight champion crowns, as well as two runner-up titles. Austin Doerner, Ben Hartman, Vanja Grgec, and Juan Xavier Munoz went a perfect 3-0 to all place first in their respective flights.
Doerner defeated Western Michigan’s Kevin Hayward, 7-5, 6-3, to be named the Brown Flight champion. Jose Moncada battled back from a loss in round one to make it to the consolation finals. He earned fifth place after beating Stephan Vogl of Indiana, 6-2, 6-4.
Hartman went up against Michael Calderone of Western Michigan. With a score of 6-2, 6-3, Hartman walked away Gold Flight Champion. With three victories this weekend, his record is set back at .500 (5-5).
Vanja Grgec earned his second flight championship this weekend, knocking of JJ Bolock of Indiana 6-3, 7-5.
Munoz represented DePaul in the round robin bracket. After playing all four competitors, Munoz posted a perfect 3-0 record to be named the winner. On Sunday afternoon, he defeated Adam Perkins of Cleveland State to clinch the title.
Alasdair Graetz and Bartosz Jozwiak both left as runner-up champions after loosing their respective matches today. Graetz lost to Indiana’s Peter Antons 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7), while Jozwiak was defeatedby Western Michigan’s Pablo Olivarez.
Tim Cadet, along with Jozwiak, competed in the Bronco Flight. In the fifth place match, Cadet beat Mithc Osborne of Bradley, 6-1, 6-2.
The Blue Demons dominated the tournament, sending representatives to every flight’s championship match. Of the nine flights, DePaul won six of them.
With the 19 singles victories earned this weekend, the Blue Demons catapult their combined record to 44-34.
The WMU Vredevelt Invitational marks the conclusion of the fall tournament season. After the New Year, the Blue Demons resume with dual match-ups.
