Men's Tennis Falls at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. The DePaul men’s tennis team came up short in a 4-3 loss to BIG EAST Conference rival Marquette on Saturday. The Blue Demons split singles competition with the Golden Eagles, but Marquette held the advantage in doubles play at the Helfaer Tennis Center.
Junior Jose Moncada improved his No. 1 singles record to 7-1 with a three-set victory over Trent Hagan in the top match. Moncada took the first set, 6-4, before Hagan bounced back with a 6-3 decision in the second frame. Moncada closed the match with a 6-2 win in the third set.
The No. 2 singles match saw junior Austin Doerner rally to a win in three sets over Dusan Medan. Medan opened the match with a 7-6 win in the first set before Doerner roared back with a 6-4 win in the second frame and a 6-3 victory in the third set. It marked Doerner’s sixth singles victory of the spring.
Sophomore Alasdair Graetz picked up his 12th singles win of the dual campaign as he defeated Mark Rutherford in three sets at No. 5 singles. Graetz won the first frame, 6-2, while Rutherford posted a 6-4 win in the second set. The third frame saw Graetz roll to a 6-1 decision.
Marquette (12-6) edged the Blue Demons in a trio of close doubles matches. Doerner and Moncada fell, 8-5, to Rutherford and Brett Binkley at No. 1. Sophomore Vanja Grgec and Graetz dropped an 8-6 decision to Stephen Shao and Medan at No. 2. Freshmen Adam Williams and Ben Hartman took an 8-5 loss at the hands of Niko Boulieris and Hagan in the No. 3 match.
DePaul (12-9, 2-1 BIG EAST) returns to competition tomorrow with a non-conference dual at Illinois State. The Blue Demons challenge the Redbirds in Normal, Illinois at 1 p.m. (CST).
