Cross Country Crosses Town to Run in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational

CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams make the short trip to Montrose Beach to participate in the 36th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Saturday. The yearly meet, which features several races for all ages, is hosted by Loyola-Chicago and is one of the largest cross country meets in the country.
The Blue Demons join more than 60 teams for a men’s 8K race, scheduled for 11 a.m., (CST) followed by women’s 5K trek slated for 11:45 a.m. The field of competition features regional rivals St. Xavier, Chicago State, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and host Loyola-Chicago.
DePaul has been led by the ever improving performances of Mary Cate Quiett and Matthew Graham. Quiett paced the women at the Fordham Fiasco with a 5K time of 19:34, and most recently finished 15th at the National Catholic Championship with a 5K performance of 18:38. Graham was runner-up at the Fordham Fiasco with an 8K time of 26:43. He bettered his time at the National Catholic Championship posting a 25:50.
Terah Cheatham has also proven to be strong for the Blue Demons. She led the team at the DePaul opener with a 4K time of 15:06. Luke Rygh most recently finished 19th, just five seconds behind Graham, at the National Catholic Championship. The men finished in third place, behind regionally ranked Duquesne and No. 20 Notre Dame.
The annual event was renamed in memory of its namesake, Sean Earl, a revered member of the Loyola cross country community. In February of 2000, Earl succumbed to his battle with cancer.
