Blue Demons conclude their season with strong effort in Stillwater
STILLWATER, Okla. – DePaul cross country capped its Friday morning with a strong effort at the 2025 NCAA Midwest Regionals hosted by Oklahoma State University. The Blue Demons competed in the women's 6k and men's 10k, finishing 26th and 20th in their respective races in a field with eight total USTFCCCA-ranked teams.
The women's competition began at 9:00 a.m. CT, while the men's 10k followed thereafter at 10:00 a.m. CT.
"We had a good conference meet, and even though today didn't go our way, I'm proud of every kid I was able to coach this year" said Head Coach Geoff Wayton. "Some of these guys are still learning to handle the 10K; it's not their strength yet, but they showed grit against much older athletes. On the women's side, we lost our number one runner early in the season, and that changed things, but they kept competing and stayed together."
In the 6k, sophomore Vivian Wyller once again led the pack, timing in at 22:23.2 with a 98th-place finish. Her performance marks the fourth-straight event Wyller has led DePaul.
Isabella Orozco cleared the finish line shortly after in 22:37.9, her second time finishing runner-up for the Blue Demons this season. Kalina Urbaniak clocked in a time of 22:49.8, finishing 139th for DePaul.
The Blue Demons' top-five was rounded out by Gianna Sanchez and Sara Cordova, who completed their morning efforts with 23:10.5 and 24:15.2, respectively.
The men's 10k followed, posing as the longest race of the season, with many young Blue Demons racing the event for the first time in their collegiate careers.
The men were led by experienced junior Mason Krieg, as he finished in the top-75 with a time of 32:28.5.
Sophomore Mohamed Abdullahi clocked in next, completing the 10k for the first time and placing 106th with a bar-setting mark of 33:05.7. Kyle Clark came across exactly four seconds later, placing 110th at the third-spot for DePaul.
John Bush earned himself a personal best in the 10k en route to a fourth-spot finish for the Blue Demons, clocking a time of 33:49.1. Freshman Daniel Grauer rounded off the top five, posting a time of 33:51.1 in his debut 10k performance.
"Some kids are disappointed, but that's a good thing. They care, they hate to lose, and that's the most important foundation to build on" reflected Wayton. "You try to learn from a season like this and apply it to the next one. We'll be back on track in three weeks."
