CHICAGO - The DePaul men's tennis team travels the short distance to compete at Northwestern's Wildcat Invitational, Oct. 2-4 at the Vandy Christine Tennis Center. Singles matches are scheduled to begin each morning, while doubles play starts in the early afternoon of the three-day tournament.
Teams from Toledo, Marquette, Ball State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa, Drake, Western Illinois and host Northwestern are scheduled to participate at the tournament.
The tournament features four flights - A, B, C, and D of singles with 16 competitors in each flight. Bartosz Jozwiak and Ben Hartman play in the A flight, while Alasdair Graetz and Vanja Grgec compete in the B singles flight. Matija Palinic and Douglas Perrin will represent DePaul in the C flight and Mathias Hambach and Jon Polanec battle in the D flight. Although two Blue Demons are in each flight, the student-athletes will not meet unless they play for the championship or third place in their respective flights.
The Wildcat Invitational also has two flights of doubles. The duo of Hartman and Jozwiak will look to continue their perfect 4-0 season in the A flight with Palinic and Perrin. Graetz and Polanec along with Hambach and Grgec will clash in the B flight.
The Blue Demons started their 2009-10 season last week at the Ball State Fall Invitational. DePaul collected nine singles victories while Hambach won the C Flight with a perfect 4-0 record. In doubles action, Hartman and Jozwiak won the A Flight with four consecutive wins while Graetz and Polanec reached the semifinals of the B flight.
DePaul could see some familiar faces across the net as last week's Ball State Fall Invitational featured student-athletes from Marquette and Ball State. The Blue Demons collectively went 3-3 against Golden Eagles and Cardinals in singles play while DePaul collected a 3-1 doubles record over the two schools.
It Could Happen: Vanja Grgec and Ben Hartman could get their 40th doubles victory... Grgec enters the weekend with a 39-30 record in doubles action while Hartman is 39-17.
Up Next: The Blue Demons travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Midwest Regional Oct. 15-19.
