Jozwiak Claims Brown Flight Championship at the Vredevelt Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Bartosz Jozwiak remained perfect at the Vredevelt Invitational on Sunday as the junior won the Brown Flight in straight sets. In addition to the Championship, DePaul picked up four other singles victories in the final day of the tournament hosted by Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club.
Jozwiak reached the Championship of the flight without dropping a set in his prior two matches. Sunday was no different, as he dominated Kazuay Komada from Western Michigan 6-3, 6-4. The DePaul junior improves to 6-3 this season while he sports a 51-26 career record in singles action.
Douglas Perrin and Vanja Grgec both took home second place honors in their respective brackets. Perrin, playing for the Championship in the Black Flight fell to Simon Blomber Western Michigan 6-3, 6-2. Perrin a sophomore, is playing his first season at DePaul, and registered a 5-4 mark during fall.
Grgec participated in a four-man round robin tournament. The senior took home second place honors with a 2-1 tournament mark and won his Sunday match 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 over Timon Reichelt from Illinois State.
Outside of the top two finishers in each bracket, Matija Palinic, Alasdair Graetz, Mathias Hambach and Jon Polanec all won their matches on Sunday.
Palinic and Hambach each finished their respective brackets in third. Palinic topped Zeyad Montasser from Western Michigan 6-3, 6-4 in the Black Flight; while Hambach used three sets in his 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over Nate Kirk from UIC in the White Flight.
Graetz earned fifth place honors in the Black Flight with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory over Illinois State's Xavier Riart-Ferrer. Polanec closed out the White Flight with a come-from-behind victory over Tommy Calderone from Western Michigan 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Sunday's matches were DePaul's final ones of 2009. The Blue Demons begin 2010 and their "Duel Schedule" on January 16 when they host a UIC and the University of Chicago at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. The Blue Demons combined for 50 singles wins and 21 doubles victories during the 2009 fall tournament portion of their schedule.
