Birmingham, Ala. Despite wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, the DePaul men’s tennis team continued to struggle today, losing a 5-2 decision against Alabama-Birmingham. The Blue Demons fall to 13-9, while UAB improved to 9-10.
The Blazers won the doubles point, posting wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. No. 1 duo Austin Doerner and Ben Hartman captured their 14th victory as a pair, defeating Dennis Ehrilich and Slawomir Szeremeta, 8-6.
Doerner hit the 20-win milestone in singles action, beating Dan Cornei, 6-1, 6-2. The senior heads into tomorrow’s dual with an eight match win streak, all coming in the top match.
Jose Moncada registered the only other win for DePaul in the No. 2 match. With his 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Brian Ly, he enhanced his singles record to a team-high 23-9.
After taking the first set, 6-0, Hartman dropped the second stanza to Alex Emery, 6-3. In the third and deciding set Hartman bowed out, 6-2. Alasdair Graetz lost to Daniel Moser, 6-3, 6-2, while Bartosz Jozwiak fell to Tyrone Ewels, 6-2, 6-3.
Vanja Grgec bounced back after a 6-4 first set loss to even things out in the second, 6-3. Because the match had already been decided, the third set was played in a tiebreaker format. Grgec was narrowly edged by Thomas Petrich, 10-7.
The Blue Demons return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CST) to face Georgia State.
