TAMPA, Fla. The DePaul men’s tennis team finished a program-high second place in the BIG EAST Conference championships after placing third a year ago. After knocking off the top seed Louisville yesterday, 4-3, the Blue Demons bowed out to USF in the championship match. The Bulls took home the title for the first time in program history.
USF, who played host to this year’s conference tournament, tallied the doubles point after wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Bartosz Jozwiak and Matija Palinic fell to Wael Kilani and Yannick Yoshizawa, 8-2. Jamal Adderley and Mahmoud Harned clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Alasdair Graetz and Jose Moncada.
The struggles continued for DePaul as the squads transitioned into singles play. Vanja Grgec lost to Thomas Estrada in the No. 6 singles match, 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after Austin Doerner suffered a 6-1, 6-4 defeat from Lucas Jovita in the top match. The match came to a close after Bartosz Jozwiak lost to Romain Deridder, 6-1, 6-1.
“We came out a little flat today,” stated head coach Matt Brothers, “But we can’t hang our heads. We came here, competed well and played with class. Making it to the finals was an amazing accomplishment and I am very proud of the team.”
DePaul ends its 2008-09 season with an 18-10 record in addition to reaching No. 50 on the ITA national tennis rankings earlier this season.
