CHICAGO - Three events highlight the 2010 DePaul cross country schedule according to cross country coach Pat Savage.
Leading off is the Sept. 4 season-opening meet, the Vincentian Cup, which will be hosted by the Blue Demons and also feature St. John's and Niagara.
On Sept. 11, DePaul competes in the BIG EAST Preview hosted by Syracuse in Jamesville, N.Y.
The National Catholic Championship is set for Sept. 17 at Notre Dame.
Savage is fired up about the Vincentian Cup, which brings together the three Catholic universities from the Vincentian order on the 350th anniversary of the death of St. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac.
"It's going to be a weekend of competition and celebration," Savage said. "There will be a pizza party Friday night for all three teams and a luncheon on Saturday after the meet.
"All three teams---about 70-80 athletes---will undertake a community-service project. Later on, I'll take all the athletes on the `L' for a tour of Downtown and have them experience real Chicago life. Hopefully, some friendships will bond from all of this."
DePaul's Matthew Graham will be one of the featured runners at the BIG EAST Preview. Graham won every race last season leading up to the conference meet and became the first Blue Demon to be named to the All-BIG EAST Cross Country Team.
The National Catholic Championship is a focal point for the Blue Demons. In last year's meet with a field of more than 30 teams, the women finished third and the men fourth.
The DePaul men's team this season will be led by Graham, Max Rodrigues, Luke Rygh, Max Clink and Brian Begalke.
The top returnees on the women's team include Mary Cate Quiett, Stephanie Hughes, Toni Salvatore, Kelly Pickering and Claire O'Brien.
