DePaul Starts off Strong

CHICAGO- The DePaul cross country team opened the 2010 season with the Vincentian Cup Invitational at Channel Runne Park in Lincolnwood, Ill. Matthew Graham and freshman Edward McDaniel led the men's squad with first and second places finishes while Toni Salvatore, Mary Cate Quiett, Stephanie Hughes and freshman Elena Sanz finished in the top four and led the Blue Demons to a first place finish.
Graham finished the four mile race with a time of 19:59.44, nearly a minute ahead DePaul teammate and second place finisher, McDaniel. The freshman ran a time of 20:54.96. This is Grahams sixth consecutive regular season first place finish, dating back to last season's DePaul Opener.
Max Clink finished in 12th place while Tyler Schmitt finished in 16th, Zak Koronkiewicz finished in 17th, Ian Sanchez finished in 18th, Lucas Junk finished in 22nd and Brian Begalke finished 29th.
Salvatore won the 4k race with a time of 14:36.79. Salvatore was then followed by three DePaul teammates. Quiett came in second with a time of 15:08.16, Hughs came in third with a time of 15:12.79 and Sanz came in fourth with a time of 15:15.38.
Five other DePaul women runners finished in the top 30 led by Kelly Pickering in eighth. She was followed by Claire O'Brien in 9th, Courtney Avvampato in 15th, Erin Lakie in19th and Alexandra Muller in 28th.
The Loyola-Chicago men's team posted the top team score with 25 points while the Blue Demons compiled 39 points and the Niagra totaled 74 points. On the women's side, the Blue Demons used the top four finishers for total of 17 points ahead of Loyola-Chicago with 63 points, St. Johns with 70 points and Niagra with 95 points.
Up next for the Blue Demons is the BIG EAST Preview on Friday, Sept. 11. The meet takes place at Jamesville Beach Park in Jamesville, N.Y. starting at 8 a.m.
