CHICAGO - With the match tied at three, DePaul junior Sven Kasper clinched No. 68 DePaul's, 4-3 win over No. 64 Purdue on Sunday at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness. The victory was the Blue Demons' fourth straight of the dual season.
After DePaul's Filip Dzanko tied the match at three with his win on the second court -- players from both DePaul and Purdue gathered around the third court to watch the dual's dramatic finish. With the players on the floor and a packed grandstand cheering for each point in the third set both Kasper and his opponent Aaron Dujovne felt the pressure.
Tied at one in the final set, Kasper won three straight games and took a 4-1 lead before Dunjovne held serve and broke Kaspers' serve to pull within one, 4-3. The raucous pro-DePaul crowd lifted Kasper to victory as the sophomore broke Dujovne for a 5-3 advantage.
In the final set, Kasper held the serve, and put an exclamation point on his seventh victory of the season by serving up an ace on match point.
As soon as the ball ricocheted out of bounds, Kasper was met by his enthusiastic teammates as four straight singles wins clinched DePaul's win over the visiting Boilermakers.
After dropping the doubles point, DePaul dug deep on the singles courts. With momentum, Purdue (0-1) took a 2-0 advantage with a win on this sixth court.
George Chanturia put the Blue Demons on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Szymon Tatarczyk in the top spot.
Like a see-saw, Purdue took a 3-1 lead after claiming victory on the fifth court. Just as the Boilermakers recorded their third victory, Mathias Hambach finished off Krisztian Krocsko in three exciting sets. Hambach's win set up the matches' dramatic conclusion.
DePaul heads to Boston for the Harvard Invitational Jan. 27-28. The Blue Demons are scheduled to face student-athletes from Denver, No. 63 Drake and No. 70 Harvard.
