IOWA CITY - After losing the doubles point, the No. 73 DePaul men's tennis team fought back and topped Iowa 4-3 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Sunday. The win snaps a two-match skid for the Blue Demons, who improve to 6-3 while Iowa drops to 1-4.
After getting swept during doubles, the Blue Demons rebounded in singles and picked up a hard-fought road win over a tough Big Ten opponent.
Up 1-0, the Hawkeyes used wins on the fifth and sixth courts to put pressure on the remaining four courts as Iowa needed just one win to clinch the match victory.
Filip Dzanko put DePaul on the board with his overpowering 6-0, 6-3 win in the top spot. Mathias Hambach bounced back from a first-set loss on the fourth court and defeated Tom Mroziewicz 6-1, 6-0 in the final two sets to pull the Blue Demons within one, 3-2.
Sven Kasper mirrored Hambach's efforts as the junior rebounded from a set-one loss and took the final two sets -- 6-4, 6-2 which knotted the score at three all.
All attention turned to the second court with DePaul's George Chanturia and Iowa's Will Vasos heading deep into the deciding set. Chantruia won the first set 7-5, but Vasos took the second 6-2.
With Chanturia and Vasos battling for every point and each team cheering louder with every score the tension mounted, but it was the Blue Demons senior who pulled out the deciding victory. Chanturia won the final set 6-2.
The Blue Demon head back into Big Ten territory, but this time in Minnesota. DePaul plays Arizona from the Pac-12 in Minneapolis on Feb. 10, before tangling with the Golden Gophers on Feb. 12.
