PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference has announced its 2011-12 American Eagle Outfitters Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipients. Melissa Fraser and Matthew Graham were chosen as the recipients from DePaul. The selection was made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
Fraser, the 2011 National Champion in the javelin throw at the Canadian Senior Championship, was a USTFCCCA All-Academic award recipient in 2009 and was a member of the 2008 and 2009 BIG EAST All-Academic teams. Last outdoor season, Fraser collected her third BIG EAST Champion title in the javelin when her throw of 51.95 meters outdistanced the second place finisher by over three meters.
Graham has enjoyed success in both cross country and track and field in his time at DePaul. He was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in 2009, 2010, and 2011 and was the first Blue Demon to be named to the All-BIG EAST Cross Country Team. During the 2011 cross country season, Graham took home first place at both the UIC Home Opener and the National Catholic Championships. He also placed fifth at the Greater Louisville Classic and fourth at the 2011 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships.
Thirty-two student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 16 member institutions) have been chosen as institutional winners and will receive $2,000 toward graduate studies. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
