DePaul Blows Past Marquette in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - Jessica January led a balanced attack as the DePaul women's basketball defeated Marquette 101-67 on Friday in BIG EAST Conference action at the Al McGuire Center. DePaul has won its last two games and improves to 11-5 and 3-1 in BIG EAST games. Marquette falls to 4-11 and is 0-4 in league games.
With every available player getting minutes, DePaul controlled the game from the opening tip.
January paced DePaul with 19 points and Megan Podkowa scored 17. Mart'e Grays (14) and Brooke Schulte (11) both came off the bench to finish in double-figures.
Brandi Harvey-Carr, Schulte and Grays all grabbed six rebounds to lead the Blue Demons.
Using its signature pressure defense, DePaul forced Marquette into 26 turnovers. Podkowa was credited with three steals while the Blue Demons combined for 11 against the Golden Eagles.
DePaul came into the game averaging 10.0 3-pointers per game continued to be efficient from behind the arc. The Blue Demons connected on 13 triples with Schulte accounting for three of those. Chanise Jenkins, Ashton Millender and Podkowa each drained a pair of 3-pointers.
Baskets by January, Brittany Hrynko and Podkowa gave the Blue Demons and early 8-0 advantage in the opening 2:15.
DePaul took its first double-digit lead (18-7) on a Podkowa jumper with just under 13 minutes to play in the half. Marquette scored two possessions later; but Jenkins, who tied a career-high with 10 assists, found January open at the top of the key which pushed the Blue Demons back up by double-figures for good.
Schulte knocked down a 3-pointer in front of the Marquette bench which sent DePaul to the locker room up 54-29.
With over 12 minutes to play in the game, DePaul went to its bench which outscored Marquette 44-22.
DePaul returns to McGrath-Phillips Arena for a 2 p.m. contest on Jan. 11 against Xavier. Sunday's game will be carried live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago with Dave Bernhard and Trish Babcock McGraw on the call courtside.
Notes: DePaul eclipsed the 80-point mark for the 13th time this season, the 90-point mark for the 10th time and the 100-point mark for the fourth time including the last two games… DePaul made 10-plus 3-pointers for the eighth time this season… Jessica January led DePaul in scoring for the third time this season… Jenkins tied a career high with 10 assists which she has done five times, including twice this season… Brooke Schulte (11) reached double-figures for the second time… Mart'e Grays (14) reached double-digits for the fifth time this season… Grays was 5-for-5 from the free throw line… second time DePaul has scored 100 or more points in its series with Marquette… last series meeting (2014) DePaul scored 100 points… 101 points by DePaul is the most points scored by DePaul in the series… DePaul now leads the all-time series 39-23 and has won the last two series meetings… the win ended a three-game losing streak at the Al McGuire Center.
