CHICAGO -- The DePaul men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 42 Denver on Friday night in Chicago.
With the loss, the Blue Demons fell to 11-9 while Denver improved to 14-7. The final score of the match, however, was not nearly indicative of just how tight the contest was.
DePaul lost four tiebreakers on Friday and 11 of the 14 singles sets played were decided by two games or less.
Denver jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests. But in singles play, the Blue Demons made the Pioneers earn their 14th win of the year. Nathan de Veer defeated Yannik James, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5 singles and Max Renke grinded out a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Wyatt Lovera in the No. 6 match.
In the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, both David Vieyra and Alex Galoustian put up tremendous fights against nationally-ranked Henry Craig and Diogo Rocha. At No. 1 singles, Vieyra dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (1) match to the 107th-ranked Craig, while No. 102 Rocha squeaked by Galoustian in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), in the No. 2 contest.
At No. 3 singles, Sten Leusink forced a first-set tiebreaker against Alex Gasson before ultimately falling, 7-6 (1), 6-4, and Kyle Johnson fell to David Fox, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the No. 4 match.
DePaul now turns its attention to its final two regular season matches, both against BIG EAST opponents. The Blue Demons host St. John's on April 17, their final home match of the year, before wrapping up the regular season at Marquette on April 19.
