Uptempo DePaul Sprints Past IUPUI 85-71
12/20/2017 12:00:00 AM | DePaul Ball
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons took the court Wednesday night looking to spread a little pre-Christmas cheer among their faithful at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Giving the IUPUI Jaguars their first exposure to the high-speed, frenetic style of play known as "DePaulBall," coach Doug Bruno's team sprinted to an 85-71 victory.
Amarah Coleman led DePaul with 20 points, five rebounds and four steals while Tanita Allen racked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Chante Stonewall came through with 12 points and five assists and Ashton Millender contributed 10 points. Kelly Campbell was all over the backboards with a career-high 16 rebounds to go with seven assists and five points.
It was apparent IUPUI (8-3) wasn't accustomed to playing at such a fast pace. DePaul's speeding up the tempo was a contributing factor to the Jaguars' 14 turnovers in the first half.
After leading 44-30 at halftime, the Blue Demons used an 11-2 run to move in front 59-40 midway through the third quarter. IUPUI made a late run to come within 64-52 after three quarters.
Coleman and Millender kept the DePaul offense humming in the fourth quarter and shot their team to an 81-63 lead midway through the period. The Blue Demons completed their nonconference schedule with an 8-4 record.
After falling behind 9-4 at the outset, DePaul went on a 16-4 run that led to a 22-15 lead after one quarter. Coleman had seven points in the first stanza and Stonewall five.
Three-pointers by Campbell and Lauren Prochaska in the middle of the second quarter helped the home team maintain a seven-point advantage.
Allen scored three consecutive baskets near the end of the quarter to cap off a 17-4 Blue Demon burst that secured the biggest lead of the first half at 41-27. Allen finished the first half with an extremely productive 12 points and eight rebounds in 12 minutes.
Coleman chipped in with 11 points and the versatile Campbell had nine rebounds and five assists at the break.
The Blue Demons return to action after Christmas with their BIG EAST opener Dec. 28 against Seton Hall at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
