Millender and Stonewall shine in 101-77 setback Saturday
CHICAGO – Ashton Millender and Chante Stonewall put on brilliant shooting display Saturday at Wintrust Arena, but it wasn't enough to overcome the inside strength of No. 1/1 Notre Dame in a 101-77 setback.
Millender tied a career high with 27 points while Stonewall set a career high with 21 points for No. 15/15 DePaul (1-1). Stonewall added a team-high eight rebounds while Dee Bekelja contributed eight points in 14 minutes of steady play.
Notre Dame (3-0) was led by Jackie Young's 28 points and 12 rebounds. Arike Ogunbowale scored 24 and Jessica Shepard had 15 points and 16 boards The Irish had a 48-23 advantage in rebounding.
Notre Dame had built a 14-point lead in the third quarter when five-straight Bekelja points reduced the deficit to a single digit. The visiting team responded with back-to-back scores and went up by 13.
Stonewall and Bekelja were having strong games in support of Millender, who hit back-to-back threes to bring DePaul within 10 when the Irish responded with a six-point spurt.
After a pair of Stonewall free throws, DePaul headed into the fourth quarter trailing 79-65.
Stonewall opened the fourth quarter with a pair of baskets and Lexi Held's jumper brought her team within eight. Notre Dame answered with four in a row. After a Maya Stovall layup later in the quarter made it 87-75, the Irish scored the next six for a 93-75 lead with 4:24 left in the game.
It was a promising start after the Blue Demons shot out to a 12-11 lead midway through the first quarter riding the hot shooting of Millender. Â The senior guard poured in eight points including a pair from beyond the arc.
Picking up the scoring torch, Stonewall scored 11 quick points and sparked a 9-2 DePaul run that resulted in a 26-19 lead near the end of the first quarter.
After an Arike Ogunbowale three-pointer, Millender showed off her long-distance stroke with a corner three just before the buzzer for a 29-22 lead after one quarter. Millender finished off the first quarter with 13 points and Stonewall had 11

The Blue Demon pressure defense forced the Fighting Irish into 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
The home team maintained their advantage until midway through the second quarter when Young led the Irish on a 6-0 burst to overtake DePaul 38-37.
That was extended into a 14-2 run as Notre Dame built a 46-39 advantage. Another Millender three and a Tanita Allen three-point play brought the Blue Demons within three. The Irish scored the final six points of the first half to lead 54-47 at intermission.
Millender had 19 points in the first 20 minutes, just eight shy of her career high. Stonewall had 11 points.
