CAYCE, S.C. - In the end, all hopes of competing in a BIG EAST title match came down to Boris Spanjaard.
With Saturday's semifinal match against Georgetown deadlocked at 3-3, DePaul's No. 1 singles player came through with a dramatic 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory over Peter Beatty for the 4-3 victory at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
That catapulted the No. 1-seeded Blue Demons into the 12:30 p.m. (ET) title showdown against No. 3 seed Marquette (16-6).
DePaul (17-9) took an early 1-0 lead after the Spanjaard/Alex Galoustian and Tripp Tuff/Christopher Casati tandems secured the doubles point.
Tuff followed up with his singles win at No. 4 for a 2-0 lead. After Georgetown (9-6) got on the board at No. 6 singles, Casati built the advantage to 3-1 with a victory at No. 4.
That's when the Hoyas, on the brink of elimination, dug down for back-to-back victories at No. 5 and No. 2 singles.
Now the season hinged on the sophomore from the Netherlands, and after dropping the first set, Spanjaard rallied for the game-defining result.
That gave DePaul two teams in the conference finals as the Blue Demon women's tennis team advanced to the title match several hours earlier.
