Spanjaard's four-straight wins net Milwaukee Tennis Classic consolation title
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Tripp Tuff, Fran Tonejc and Boris Spanjaard had some prime-time performances for the Blue Demons on Saturday.
Tuff and Tonejc both advanced to Sunday title matches at the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational at Western Michigan while Spanjaard won four consecutive consolation matches to emerge as the consolation champion at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Tuff will square off against Joshua Xu of the University of Chicago after knocking off Pol Botifoll Rius of Illinois State 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Western Michigan's Peter Kuszynski 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Fran Tonejc topped Illinois State's Diego Herrera 6-0, 6-4 and followed up with a semifinal win over Gabriel Carvajal of Valparaiso.
In the rugged Flight B, Vito Tonejc dropped his collegiate singles debut 6-3, 7-6 (5) against Kennosuke Nouchi of the host Broncos before rebounding with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Paul Gota of rival Notre Dame.
Luuk Wassenaar prevailed over WMU's Nick Schnobel 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 10-4 in a hard-fought quarterfinal match before losing to Xu 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. The DePaul sophomore will play for third place on Sunday against Kuszynski.
On day three of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, the Spanjaard/Christopher Casati doubles team lost 6-0 in the main draw to Luca Wiedenmann and Preston Touliatos of Tennessee.
Then Spanjaard went on his sensational run leading off with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Matis Bot of St. Mary's.
In the consolation quarterfinals, the Blue Demon junior from the Netherlands took down Justyn Levin of Minnesota 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals, he won by default over Luke Phillips of Cleveland State.
That brought him to the final test, and Spanjaard was up to the challenge with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 triumph over Sam Tullis of Brigham Young.
That resulted in a fun and upbeat ride home to Lincoln Park for Spanjaard, Casati and assistant coach Hugo Leenders.
