Blue Demons move to 2-0 in BIG EAST play
CHICAGO – The DePaul men's tennis team earned a hard fought victory over the visiting Creighton Bluejays on Friday night on the courts of Lakeshore Sport and Fitness.
In front of a boisterous crowd, the Blue Demons took the early 1-0 advantage with two doubles victories.
The brother duo of Vito Tonejc and Fran Tonejc got DePaul started with a 6-4 victory over Creighton's Nick Campbell and Daniel Lopez-Rey. Conor O'Meara and Luuk Wassenaar clinched the doubles point for the Blue Demons in a gritty 7-6 (7-2) win over Armando Gandini and Joe Hoff.
Wassenaar carried the momentum into his singles match as the sophomore made quick work of Mac Mease at No 6. in a straight set victory 6-3, 6-4.
At the No. 2 position, Vito Tonejc tallied the third point of the match for DePaul with a 6-3, 6-3 take down of Stratton Brown.
Boris Spanjaard clinched the match for the Blue Demons in a back and forth battle at No. 1 with Nick Campbell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Coach Matt Brothers and DePaul (3-2, 2-0) are back on the courts tomorrow for a 3:15p.m. meeting with cross town rival UIC.
