After closing out a successful indoor season, the Blue Demons look to continue success in Ohio
CHICAGO – Having wrapped up their regular indoor season, the DePaul men's and women's track & field teams head to the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Blue Demons will compete at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio which has served as the site of competition for the 2016 and 2018 BIG EAST outdoor championships. Competition is slated for Friday, Feb. 22 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 23. The women's pentathlon will kick off the competition at 8:00 a.m. CT on Friday and the events will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 2:15 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Four Blue Demons look to defend their 2018 BIG EAST championship titles. On the women's side, Alexia Brooks will look to improve her 8.33 finish in the 60-meter hurdles that edged out Villanova's Danielle Burns. Brooks' best time this season was achieved at the Spire Division I classic where she earned second place at the meet, clocking in a time of 8.35 in the finals.
Seniors Kyle Decker, Brian Mada and Kyle Hedge look to maintain their dominating presence in their respective events. Three-time defending champion in the 60-meter hurdles, Decker ran an impressive 8.24 last year to take home the gold and set a career best in the event.
Mada was one of eight multiple-event winners last year taking home the first-place title in the long and triple jump events. Looking to claim the title for a fourth year, the three-time defending champion in the triple jump marked a dominating 15.10-meter performance. The Rusape, Zimbabwe native edged out Marquette's Cory Cegelski for the top spot in the long jump marking a 7.30-meter finish.
Taking home the titles in 2017 and 2018, Hedge's throws were good for gold. His 15.99-meter distance to earn gold last year has been much improved upon as he threw a career best 16.47-meter distance at the Blue and Gold Invitational to begin the season.
Other notable student-athletes include now-school-record-holder Caroline Muller in the high jump. The senior's 1.75-meter jump earned her not only a first-place title at the Meyo Invitational but the top spot of the program's record book in the event.
Another field standout this season looking to take home a title is sophomore Jade Gates. Beginning in her career this season in the weight throw, the St. Louis, Mo. native has earned three top-three performances setting a personal best of 18.41-meters at the Meyo Invitational which puts her second among conference competitors.
Jade Nolan, who earned BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week honors, is set to compete in the long jump and triple jump at the championships. Nolan sits in the top spot among BIG EAST competitors in the long jump thanks to a 5.81-meter mark at the Meyo Invitational at the beginning of the month.
