DePaul closes out 2019 season at 11-14
CAYCE, S.C. -- When BIG EAST semifinal action resumed on Sunday morning at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center, the No. 4 seed DePaul men's tennis team couldn't find their rhythm as No. 1 seed St. John's topped the Blue Demons 4-0.
In doubles action, the Red Storm claimed the early advantage taking wins at the No. 2 spot over brothers Vito Tonejc and Fran Tonejc and barely claiming the edge over Conor O'Meara and Luuk Wassenaar at No. 3.
On the singles side, the Blue Demons competed at every position, forcing three three set matches but ultimately dropped matches at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6 to give St. John's the title match berth.
At No. 6, Ognjen Trejgut of St. John's gave the Red Storm the 2-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tamas Zador.
The Red Storm widened their advantage to 3-0 when Aditya Vashistha edged Luuk Wassenaar at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4.
Vito Tonejc gave it his all in his final match of a phenomenal rookie campaign, but fell short at No. 1 to Andrei Crapcenco 1-6, 6-1, 2-6 which clinched the match for St. John's. Tonejc closed out his inaugrual spring season with an overall record of 20-12, and a 11-4 mark at the No.1 spot.
The semifinal match served as the final match that Conor O'Meara would don a Blue Demon uniform. O'Meara was instrumental in the teams success over the past four seasons especially on the doubles side where he boasted a 14-10 overall record in his senior campaign, including a nearly perfect 6-1 conference mark with partner Luuk Wassenaar.
DePaul ends the season with an overall record of 11-14 and will await all-conference selections, announced later this week. The Blue Demons future is bright as the 2019-2020 roster will see seven letterwinners return from this season.
