
Softball and Women’s Tennis Claim BIG EAST Team Academic Awards

CHICAGO – Two DePaul teams earned BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards as the honors were announced by the league office. A total of 22 teams from the league's sports were recognized for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
Eight of the 10 all-sport BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored as the Blue Demons were one of six schools with more than one team winner. DePaul's teams with the top GPAs included softball and women's tennis. DePaul has led the BIG EAST in Team Academic Excellence Awards in seven of the last nine years.
Butler and St. John's totaled four teams apiece with top academic marks followed by Creighton and Seton Hall with three teams and DePaul and Villanova with two teams each. Georgetown and Marquette along with affiliate members Temple and Denver rounded out the award winners with one nod apiece.
The winners were chosen based on the 2018-19 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Since 2008-09, the DePaul's women's basketball, women's cross country, golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field and volleyball teams have all earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence at least once.
In the last 11 academic years DePaul has totaled 62 programs to earn the league's Team Academic Excellence Award with a department-best eight teams in 2016-17, 2014-15 and 2012-13.
