Blue Demon guard honored as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
CHICAGO – Nothing like starting off the week in our crazy, unpredictable world with some good news as DePaul's Darrione Rogers won the first BIG EAST accolade of her burgeoning collegiate career on Monday.
Rogers was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after averaging 18.5 points and shooting nearly 48 percent from the field. She was the third-highest scorer overall in the league last week.
After a 12-point, three-rebound game against Chicago State, Rogers turned in a memorable performance against fifth-ranked Louisville last Friday in the Women's Jimmy V Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
In just her third college game, the 5-foot, 11-inch guard from Lake Park West scored a game-high 25 points in the setback. It was the highest-scoring performance by a Blue Demon in this early season.
Rogers came to Lincoln Park acknowledged among the top 50 recruits in the country with her selection to the Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Girls Trophy Watch List after averaging 25.9 points and 10 rebounds a game. She was rated the No. 50 prospect in the country by ESPN and Prospects Nation.
Villanova sophomore forward Maddie Siegrist repeated as BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 21 points and 13.5 rebounds in road wins at Temple and BIG EAST foe St. John's---giving her four double-doubles on the season.
Temi Carda of Creighton, Camryn Taylor (Marquette), Kyra Spiwak (Providence) and Leilani Correa (St. John's) were named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Last week, Dee Bekelja became the first Blue Demon this season to earn a BIG EAST weekly award with her selection to the Honor Roll.
DePaul's next scheduled game is Sunday against North Side rival Loyola with a 3 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena.
