Sixth time a Blue Demon earns one of nation's top academic honors
CHICAGO – Chante Stonewall received one of the nation's highest academic honors on Monday when she was named to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.
She becomes only the fifth different Blue Demon in program history to earn such an accolade, and the first since Jessica January was a repeat selection in 2017.
Stonewall has led No. 18/16 DePaul to its third consecutive BIG EAST tournament title game (Monday at 7 p.m.) and its sixth BIG EAST regular-season title in the last seven years. She is among the nation's leaders in field goals and shot attempts and has been honored as an All-BIG EAST First Team selection along with being voted BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year by opposing coaches.
The 6-foot, 1-inch forward from Downstate Normal is among the top candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award singling out the top 20 small forwards in the country. She was also named to the watch lists for the Naismith Citizen Cup Award and the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.
The senior co-captain leads DePaul (27-5) into tonight's game against Marquette at Wintrust Arena averaging 17.3 points a game, and as the point person on the Blue Demons' vaunted full-court press has been playing 94 feet of defense throughout the season.
Currently, Stonewall is No. 12 all-time on the career scoring list with 1,600 points---just five shy of No. 11 Chanise Jenkins. Cracking the top 10 would mean surpassing JoAnn Feiereisel (1,630) with No. 9 Jenni Dant (1,633) also within reach.
With a double major in Psychology and Sociology, Stonewall carries a 3.68 grade-point average and was honored as the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball---the league's highest academic award.
It's no wonder she was voted onto the All-America Third Team in nationwide voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Other DePaul CoSIDA Academic All-Americans include Anne McDonald (1999), current Chicago Sky and WNBA All-Star Allie Quigley (2008), Megan Podkowa and Jessica January (2016) and January again in 2017.
