Blue Demons pick up first road win of the season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – DePaul women's basketball picked up its first road win of the season Saturday afternoon with a 59-54 defeat of Georgetown at McDonough Arena. Behind a stout defensive effort and a 20-point outing from Ally Timm, the Blue Demons secured the season sweep and earned the No. 10 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament.
Timm finished in double figures for the eighth time this season and recorded her third 20-point performance, shooting 6-for-10 from distance. The redshirt-freshman tallied her fifth game this season with four or more triples.
Kate Novik collected her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 55 percent from the field. The junior also matched her career high with four blocks.
Natiah Nelson reached double figures for the fifth time in the last six games with 10 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Redshirt-freshman Alayna West grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists.
DePaul (8-23, 5-15 BIG EAST) outrebounded Georgetown 43-35, including 15 offensive boards, marking its 16th game this season with 15 or more offensive rebounds.
The Blue Demons' stalwart defensive effort held the Hoyas to 54 points, their lowest output by a BIG EAST opponent this season.
Indya Davis led Georgetown with 11 points.
How It Happened
After Georgetown jumped out to a 7-2 start, the Blue Demons hit four of their next five attempts to claim a 10-8 lead at the media timeout. Ojo and Timm combined for DePaul's first four buckets. A steal from West followed by Timm's fourth triple of the game pushed DePaul in front 18-13. Free throws in the final minute trimmed the margin to three at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Demons were held without a field goal for nearly two minutes in the second quarter as the Hoyas used a 7-0 run to take a 29-27 lead with four minutes remaining in the half. Novik broke the drought with a layup in the paint, but Georgetown responded with a 6-0 spurt to close the half ahead 35-29.
DePaul opened the second half on an 11-3 run to reclaim the lead and force a Georgetown timeout at the 5:49 mark of the third quarter. A scoring drought of nearly four and a half minutes allowed the Hoyas to edge back in front 46-45 at the end of the period.
Timm's sixth three-pointer of the game gave DePaul a 51-48 advantage three minutes into the fourth quarter. The Hoyas were held scoreless for 4:51 as the Blue Demons extended their lead to 56-48, their largest of the game, on an offensive putback from Nelson. Georgetown scored four straight points to cut it to a two-possession game, but would come no closer as DePaul held on for the 59-54 victory.
