Blue Demon seniors selected to NACDA Scholar-Athlete Team
CHICAGO – No. 15/14 DePaul doubled up on national postseason accolades Monday when both Chante Stonewall and Kelly Campbell were selected to the prestigious National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I-AAA Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team.
Only 10 women's basketball student-athletes nationwide received the highest recognition awarded by NACDA.
The extraordinary Blue Demon duo led their team to a three-peat BIG EAST tournament title along with its sixth conference regular-season crown in the last seven years. Coach Doug Bruno's program advanced to its 18th consecutive NCAA tournament, and the 28-5 record had the team on track to host the first two rounds of March Madness.
For Stonewall, this is her fifth national accolade following CoSIDA Academic All-America and being named honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press, US Basketball Writers Association and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
What made Stonewall stand apart from many of the nation's leading players was her ability to excel on both ends of the court.
Whether with the basketball in her hands or chasing after it, Stonewall made an impact on all 94 feet of the court for more than 33 minutes a game.
Offensively, she attacked the basket at the rate of 17.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game and was No. 10 in the country in field goals, No. 12 in shot attempts and No. 24 in scoring.
The 6-foot, 1-inch forward was at the point of attack defensively triggering a vaunted full-court press that lifted DePaul to No. 2 in the nation in turnover margin and No. 9 in turnovers forced.
The Blue Demons forced 20 or more turnovers in 25 of their 33 games including 21 from legendary Connecticut. Opponents lost possession of the ball an average of 21.5 times a game.
It's no wonder the All-BIG EAST First Team selection and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team forward was also honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. The Downstate Normal native was the No. 11 scorer all-time with 1,622 points when the season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
She was also named BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and recognized on the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award Top 20 Watch List, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List and the Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List along with being a Senior CLASS Award nominee.
Campbell also made her presence felt all over the court and throughout the box score. The 5-10 senior guard posted the second triple-double of her career on Super Bowl Sunday with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists against Providence.
She came so close to two more triple-doubles this season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists against Notre Dame and nine points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists against Butler. On the season, Campbell averaged 8.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists while shooting a BIG EAST-leading 46 percent from three-point range.
This unflappable orchestrator of the nation's No. 2 scoring offense led the country in assist-turnover ratio and was No. 5 in assists. She was All-BIG EAST Second Team and honored with the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award.
The two-time Nancy Lieberman Award Top 10 finalist (top point guards in the nation) was also a Citizen Naismith Trophy nominee and a Senior CLASS Award nominee.
She scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 19 at Butler and finished fourth all-time in career assists with 672 and seventh all-time in career rebounds with 978. If not for the NCAA cancelling the season, Campbell was within range of becoming only the sixth women's basketball player in DePaul history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
The Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) is proud to announce the members of the 18th Annual Scholar-Athlete Team presented by ARMS Software. In addition, the association selected a men's and women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and two postgraduate scholarship recipients.
