Both Blue Demons fall short in their second matches at high-powered national event
TULSA, Okla. – Tripp Tuff just keeps on rolling.
His late addition to the ITA All-American Championships reflected well on the prestigious tournament's selection committee.
In his opening match at the toughest tournament of the fall season, the graduate student from Watermill, N.Y. won his sixth consecutive singles match after a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Jakob Cadonau of Ole Miss in the Pre-qualifying round.
At that point on Saturday morning, Tuff was 7-1 in singles on the season.
Tuff's debut at the ITA All-American Championships maintained his early momentum from last weekend when he won all four of his singles matches at Notre Dame and was selected to the Bobby Bayliss All-Tournament Team.
That fast start hit a speed bump in Tuff's second match when he lost 6-4, 6-1 to Tomas Rodriguez of Tennessee Chattanooga.
Luuk Wassenaar followed Tuff's opening win with one of his own, prevailing over Liberty's Thando Longwe-Smith 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. He won the opening set of his second match 6-3, but lost the second set 6-3 and the super tiebreaker 10-2.
Marino Jakic will play a consolation match on Sunday after falling 6-3, 6-2 to Evan McDonald of Texas. On Monday, Vito Tonejc begins play in the Qualifying singles round and teams with Jakic in Qualifying doubles.
