Return to Arthur Ashe Invitational Saturday with 4 p.m. match against Illinois State
WEST POINT, N.Y. – There's nothing like opening your season on a winning note.
Marshalling its forces with five new enlistments and five returning veterans, the new-look defending BIG EAST champion Blue Demons won their initial skirmish 6-1 over Army West Point Saturday morning at the Arthur Ashe Invitational.
DePaul wasted little time firing the opening salvo at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Coach Matt Brothers' team secured the doubles point with Vito Tonejc and freshman Marino Jakic prevailing over the Black Knights' top doubles team 6-4 while Tripp Tuff and freshman Matteo Iaquinto won by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Pressing the attack, No. 1 singles standout Tonejc took down Army's best, A.J. Woodman 6-0, 6-3. Tripp Tuff had a successful dual-season debut with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over Samuel Eden at No. 3 singles.
Three more rookies swept their West Point adversaries.
Jakic defeated David Gorshein 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and Leon Huck won his first collegiate dual match 6-4, 6-4 over Nathan Jose. Jakic comes into the dual season ranked No. 124 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
