Former DePaul star shooting to become first four-time winner of 3-point Contest on Saturday
CHICAGO – Allie Quigley is taking her best shot at something totally unprecedented in the history of the NBA and WNBA.
The current Chicago Sky star, WNBA champion and former DePaul standout aspires to be the first player to ever win the 3-Point Contest four times.
That could happen beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday at the WNBA MTN DEW 3-Point Contest at the McCormick Place practice court televised by ESPN.
Quigley won the WNBA competition in 2017, 2018 and last year while also competing in 2019. She had announced after her third crown last season that would be her final appearance.
After Wednesday's loss at the Minnesota Lynx, the pride of Joliet Catholic had a change of heart.
"Everybody was talking to me nonstop about it," Quigley told the Chicago Tribune after the game. "I didn't want to let the city down or my family and friends down. It'll be fun, and it's nice that it's at home. It'll be a good experience."
It could also make history.
Only Boston Celtic legend Larry Bird and former Rich East star and Bulls guard Craig Hodges have won the NBA 3-Point Contest three times.
That includes the fabled 1988 shootout at Chicago Stadium when noted trash-talker Bird walked into the locker room and announced to his competitors (including Hodges): "Just want to let you all know you're all playing for second place," and proceeded to three-peat.
Such bravado would be the last thing on Quigley's mind as she takes on a field of first-time competitors Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces), Rhyne Howard (Atlanta Dream), Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics) and Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings) along with two-time contestant Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm).
Plum leads the league in three-pointers with Ogunbowale second and Loyd fifth.
In her 14th season with the Sky, Quigley currently averages 1.4 three-pointers per game shooting 34.2 percent from behind the arc. She has knocked down 487 three-pointers in her career while averaging 39.5% from distance.
The WNBA All-Star Game tips off at noon Sunday at Wintrust Arena and will be televised by ABC.
Quigley teammates Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot will play for Team Wilson (Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson) while Sky stars Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman suit up for Team Stewart (Seattle Storm's Breanna Stewart) that will be coached by the Sky's James Wade.
