The Blue Demons compete in Chicago for the first time this season
CHICAGO – DePaul cross country completes the 44th annual Seal Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola Chicago on Friday afternoon. In the stacked field of competition, the Blue Demons earned 16th place overall in both the men's and women's Tom Cooney Championship races.
"Obviously the results speak for themselves," said coach Geoff Wayton. "When everybody runs poorly generally I blame the coach and it's on me. The part that I'm struggling with is that some people had inexplicably poor days, I mean, not 20 seconds off, minutes from where they should be and that's on them. I think we were a little too intimidated by other uniforms. Our top runners did get some experience of what it's like to run an elite field. Just a very bad day. I've had them before in my career, we'll have them again. You know, we gotta move on as soon as possible. We had some hardships. I mean, on the men's side, we're holding out our number one runner from Bradley. It's a good opportunity for other people to step up and just nothing happened. And it's really disappointing. And I know they're capable because I see it in workouts. So there's some aspect of what I did this week. They just weren't prepared."
Freshman Grace Havern kicked off the day with the women's 6k Gold Race at 10 a.m. The Katy, Texas native earned a top 100 finish with a final time of 26:12.9.
In the men's 8k Gold Race, Owen Larkins and Jack Ward took 27th place and 30th place, respectively.
The Tom Cooney Women's 6k Championship Race took place moments later with Olivia Borowiak leading the women with a final time of 21:08, Nina Amicon followed suit with a time of 21:28 and Meaghan Andrews rounded out the Blue Demons with a final time of 23:15.
DePaul's Tommy Elwood paced the Blue Demons in the Tom Cooney Men's 8k Championship Race. He led the pack with a final time of 24:40. Damian Rodriguez was the second Blue Demon to cross the finish line posting a 25:09 time. William Previdi rounded out the top three runners for DePaul with a 25:53 mark.
UP NEXT: The Blue Demons head back to Peoria, Ill. for the Bradley Pink Invitational on Oct. 13.
