Scholz matches career-high ten kills in defeat
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball concluded their 2024 campaign with a 3-1 loss (14-25,19-25, 25-17, 18-25), to Bowling Green, closing the year at 21-14 overall and 10-8 in BIG EAST play. The match marks the farthest a Blue Demon volleyball team has ever advanced in a postseason tournament, and the most wins for the program since 2001.
Graduate student Jill Pressly led the offense in her final match as a Blue Demon, with 15 kills. Middle blocker Meghan Scholz matched her career-high for the second time this season, posting ten kills, also adding a team-high five blocks on the evening.
Amanda Saeger dished out 32 assists, for her third consecutive match with 30 or more, while 2024 BIG EAST Libero of the Year Rachel Krasowski anchored the defensive efforts for DePaul, notching 13 digs in her last DePaul match.
"This group finished top eight in the NIVC," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"One of the final 24 teams in the country playing volleyball into mid-December if you add the top 16 still playing in the NCAA tournament. Five of 11 teams in the BIG EAST were still playing up until tonight. We have so much to be proud of. This senior group has truly left the jersey better than they found it. The returning players got a taste of what competing in the BIG EAST and during a postseason truly requires in having to hold onto the game for long periods of time. This was a great tipping point for our program. One that will pay off for many years down the line. We are so appreciative that DePaul Athletics sponsored this tournament and brought elite-level volleyball back to McGrath-Phillips Arena for the postseason. In the end, we came up just short but we gave it our all. This group did the jersey proud."
Bowling Green was led by 17 kills from junior Lauryn Hovey.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The teams were close early, paced by points from five different Blue Demons and five different Falcons. Bowling Green pulled ahead after a brief 3-0 scoring run, and retained their advantage, with three more kills from outside hitter Lauryn Hovey propelling the Falcons to a 25-14 set victory.
SET TWO
The sides again swapped points, with neither squad earning more than a two-point margin until Bowling Green held the lead at 21-18, proceeding to earn seven of the last eight points to take the set, 25-19.
SET THREE
A pair of 4-0 scoring runs gave DePaul an 8-2 margin to open the third stanza, including two service aces and two kills from Scholz. Bowling Green battled within two, but the Blue Demons would not relinquish their lead, as three more kills each from Pressly and Kindelberger earned DePaul the set, 25-17.
SET FOUR
The sides were equal until three Blue Demon attack errors pushed forward a 5-0 scoring run for the Falcons. DePaul came as close as 13-11, but Bowling Green trudged forward with three more kills from Hovey late, to close the set, 25-18.
