CHICAGO – DePaul Athletics welcomed U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) representative to Chicago on Thursday, Feb. 8 to debut an innovative educational session with Blue Demon student-athletes.
Led by Miami Regional Office Senior Securities Compliance Examiner and DePaul alumni, James Richardson (MBA '99), DePaul student-athletes were presented with real-world case studies and educated on how to spot and avoid financial and investment fraud. DePaul Athletics is the first college athletics program in the nation to host the SEC for this unique educational programming opportunity. The SEC will continue to offer this programming on college campuses across the nation in the coming months.
"It was a privilege to work alongside the SEC to bring this innovative educational opportunity to Chicago and DePaul's Lincoln Park campus," said Executive Associate Athletics Director Taylor Stapleton. "Our goal is to continue to source diverse learning opportunities from within DePaul's academic enterprise, as well as external experts, that allow student-athletes to confidently navigate the national name, image, and likeness (NIL) landscape, as well as prepare them for life after college."
The SEC enforces the securities laws to protect the more than 66 million American households that have turned to the securities markets to invest in their futures—whether it's starting a family, sending kids to college, saving for retirement, or attaining other financial goals.
"Listening to Jim Richardson was a great experience for anyone of all ages, especially collegiate athletes," said DePaul cross country and track senior Joe Knanishu. "Each fraudulent account that he discussed provided us with a serious understanding of the types of people that can be affected by something that might seem so obvious. My biggest takeaway from Jim's experience was that everyone has time to follow their investments. Never blindly trust anyone with your savings and working wages."
This educational opportunity is one of several innovative offerings available to Blue Demon student-athletes through DePaul's LEGACY educational program. A comprehensive entrepreneurship and brand development program for student-athletes at DePaul University—LEGACY—enables Blue Demon student-athletes to fully leverage Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation. In partnership with DePaul University's award-winning Driehaus College of Business, College of Communication, and Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, the LEGACY curriculum uniquely provides interdisciplinary learning opportunities that explore the intersection of athletics and business.
